When I found out that J was going to Paris, I specifically requested one thing:
A copy of the first Harry Potter book in French (with the bonus of a Metro ticket that serves as a bookmark). The French language and I have a curious relationship with each other. I can read it pretty well, and I have a passable understanding of spoken French. However, I have virtually no ability to speak it or write it. So far, I'm having no trouble understanding a book that's written for French children, although I probably wouldn't admit it if I did.
The most amusing thing so far is that the word for "wand" is "baguette". I keep getting this mental picture of people performing magic by waving around loaves of bread.
